wlm:~$ wlm --features

  • Layout profiles - Capture every window's position, size, and state. Restore with one click, a global hotkey, or the CLI.
  • Monitor-aware - Profiles bind to monitor sets and auto-activate when your displays change: docking, streaming with a virtual display, plugging into a projector.
  • Smart re-matching - Tries to find the right windows again even after apps restart, titles change, or Windows shoves everything onto one screen.
  • Virtual desktops - Windows go back to the desktop they were saved on.
  • Hold mode - Pin a layout live. If an app moves its window, it gets put back.
  • Visual editor - Drag windows around a minimap of your monitors, with snapping, undo/redo, and per-window history.
  • Virtual Windows - Drag a window onto a container and dock guides show exactly where it'll land, the way an IDE docks a tool window, or add one from the container's own panel. Undock is on that panel too, and hands the window back the size it walked in with. Move the container and every docked window goes with it.
  • Scriptable - --load="Profile" from the command line, wlm:// links, and the taskbar jump list.
  • Self-updating - Checks this page's feed, verifies the download by size + sha256, and swaps itself in place.

wlm:~$ wlm --install

  1. Download the zip above and extract it anywhere (e.g., C:\Apps\WindowLayoutManager).
  2. Run WindowLayoutManager.exe.
  3. Arrange your windows, hit "Save layout", done. It lives in the tray.

// SmartScreen may warn on first run since the build is unsigned. "More info" -> "Run anyway".

wlm:~$ wlm --requirements

  • os - Windows 10 / 11 (x64). Virtual-desktop features need Windows 11.
  • install - None. It's a portable folder, so deleting the folder uninstalls it.
  • network - Only used for update checks against this page.
  • license - Free for personal and commercial use. No resale. Full terms ship with the download and live in the releases repo.
